New Study Confirms: Biochar + Humic Acid Can Jointly Tackle Water Pollution
A new study in environmental remediation research shows that biochar can work in synergy with humic acid to effectively remove copper (Cu²⁺) from contaminated water.
The study, conducted by Prof. Baowei Zhao’s team at Lanzhou Jiaotong University and published in Scientific Reports, investigated how biochar–humic acid composite systems perform in water treatment. The results are promising:
Strong Synergy – The biochar–humic acid system achieved high copper removal efficiency, especially around pH≈4, showing that humic acid enhances biochar’s adsorption potential.
Robust Under Various Conditions – The system maintained strong performance with higher initial copper concentrations and at elevated temperatures, making it adaptable for different water treatment scenarios.
Stable in Presence of Other Ions – The composite’s adsorption ability was largely unaffected by calcium ions, highlighting its stability in complex water environments.
Key Takeaway: This research provides clear scientific evidence that combining biochar with humic acid can be an effective, sustainable approach to heavy metal water pollution remediation.
With heavy metal contamination posing global risks, such biochar-based composite technologies could pave the way for greener, more efficient water treatment solutions.
